ITunes Spying on YOU!

Is Apple's ITunes music player spying on you? This is a huge issue for people who use ipods because in order to get the most out of your player you have to keep the firmware and software updated. If the spyware behavior that Cory Doctorow is talking about is a mandatory piece of the updates then Apple is saying that if you bought and use the ipod with ITunes then they have the right to spy on you. And apparently their End User License Agreement says nothing about whether or not they gather the information and what they would do with it if they do. Here is an excerpt from the article on Boing Boing:
Boing Boing: iTunes update spies on your listening and sends it to Apple?: "I love iTunes because it's a clean music player. But no amount of clean UI is worth surrendering my privacy for -- I wouldn't buy a stereo that phoned home to Panasonic and told it what I was listening to; I wouldn't buy a shower radio that delivered my tuning preferences to Blaupunkt. I certainly am not comfortable with Apple shoulder-surfing me while I listen to digital music, particularly if they're doing so without my meaningful, informed consent and without disclosing what they intend on doing with that data."

If this is true, it is a very good reason to consider switching music players. There is nothing more annoying to me thant to think that I would spend hundreds of dollars on something and then have the company that I bought it from use it as a surveillance device on me or treat me like I am renting the equipment rather than purchasing it.

Apple could do a much better job. I was actually considering getting an ipod, but now that they appear to be flexing their EULA I am not so sure.

So I started riding my bike alot. This is good. Good exercise, good fun, saves money and is better for the environment. However, certain people seem to think that bikes are a nuisance. I am afraid that on 3 out of 5 occasions I am forced to use what some people like to use the "single fingered mudra of contempt".
And profanity.
Lots of profanity.
It is illegal for bikes to ride on the sidewalk in Minneapolis. It is also illegal for me to shout "YIELD TO BIKES ASSHOLE!" in the middle of the street. Although I must admit it is emotionally cleansing like primal scream therapy.
Of course I am not exactly built for speed. Some peoples bodies are built like ferraris. Mine is built more like this. Of course some people are also incredibly vain and have too much time on their hands to spend at the gym.
Eventually I will be able to hold my own a little bit better and not get so many people mad at me. But Minneapolis is supposed to be a bike friendly city, and for the most part it succeeds. What it fails at is having bike friendly citizens.

I have been doing a lot of new things lately. I stopped smoking, started riding my bike to work, started bringing my own lunch and started going to the gym. That's alot for anyone. But I do think that it is worth the effort.
What with all the exercisy type things that are included I feel like I have a lot more energy for doing things. It's kind of a crazy feeling when you are used to being tired all of the time. So, I have all sorts of energy and don't know what to do with it all.

It's been long enough

I started this blog when I was really frustrated on th job. One major source of the frustration was my boss who never seemed to get the hang of being a boss. She recently quit and I took her job. That didn't make all of the frustration go away but it did make it possible for me to deal with the frustration more directly. So, my boss quit, instead of going back to school I took her old job, I've been working really hard. That pretty much sums up my life to the moment.

My job is basically OK. I wish I could just get the hang of working here. When I do something at my work you always have to factor in so much bullshit that it is a large accomplishment when an order gets in to the printer. It is victory when the lights work and when we have toilet paper. What I need is to finish my school applications so that I can move on with my life. I don't make enough money at this job to have free time, or do interesting things when I am not at work. I make just enough to scrape by and then work some more. I could be happy most of the time if I just worked alone. But that is not possible. When I get back in school I expect to be a little bit happier and alot busier.

So I know that I am a bit of a dweeb. BUT, I also know cool stuff when I find it. Archive.org is definetely one of the coolest bits of the internet that I have ever found. It is a free library of movies, music and books. Most of the material on it is free to download and play with. I have found tons of cool music in their netlabels archive. Netlabels are music labels that only distribute their music over the internet. One of the cool things about them is that they offer downloads that are even longer than a normal CD, so if you use an MP3 player this is a perfect opportunity to get more music. If you love old movies there is the Prelinger Archives, a collection of ephemeral movies from the earlier decades of the 20th century. I am surprised that I haven't heard more about it from the media. Not all that surprised though since the archive goes against alot of mainstream thought. It distibutes information freely to all, no fees, no limits. Alot of people are afraid to give anything away. I am probably spending a little too much time on the archive though, it is highly addictive since everything on it feels like a discovery. They also have things like recordings of the presidential debates, and tv shows that are off the air. So if you read this you should check it out. You won't regret it.

So, reading other people's blogs is rather upsetting. Most of the time I don't have anything interesting to say to anyone. HOWEVER, I watched the debates last night. I simply cannot believe the bold faced lying from the B side of things. When I watch something that is going to be televised I at least expect some modicum of truthfulness. But no, he never said that Osama wasn't a threat and that he wasn't concerned about him, and these are not the droids that you are looking for. And the worst part is looking at websites today and seeing that he is now ahead in the polls. On election night there are only three possible outcomes: If K wins I get drunk, If B wins I get drunk, if there is a tie I spontaneously combust. Even when he lies and lies and lies his numbers go up! WHY? WHY?!?! Someone up there either really likes him or really hates everyone else.

Some days are just not worth getting up for. Just when you have convinced yourself that leaving the house wasn't such a bad idea after all, the perversity of the inanimate strikes with fury. Sometimes I think that office equipment can read my mind. The elevator lurks in its column, clinically depressed(as far as the inanimate can be), and full of sadistic glee it hears my morning thoughts as I ascend the staircase nearby. "Gosh, it sure is nice to come in on a Monday with nothing gone wrong yet and a cup of fresh coffee in my hand" . Suddenly my boss calls to me from the elevator. She is stuck. The print server, realizing that it is time for an office equipment
cluster fuck of errors, freezes up while printing my Out of Order Signs. My email account goes down. I realize that there are fifty boxes of proprietary information sitting in the building entrance. It is now 9 o'clock, the day has barely begun and I do not know what fresh and juicy horrors will appear before me. Yea and verily, the sun outside is shining powerfully, it is an ill portent of things to come. Last time I had a day like this I was the one stuck in the elevator. I yearn for the day that I return to school and get an advanced degree that means that I will NEVER have to say anything like "How can I direct your call?" ever again. For those of you who don't know, I am a receptionist for a fairly large environmental organization. Despite the fact that I love my workplace, I am beginning to deeply loathe my job. I shouldn't actually say beginning to loathe, because it takes a long time to get into this state of mind. I think that I shall have to post something about my boss to explain the wierdness. In the meantime, back to the problems
